Fine tuning as an indication of physics beyond the MSSM

چکیده

We investigate the amount of fine tuning of the electroweak scale in the presence of new physics beyond the MSSM, parametrized by higher dimensional operators. We show that these significantly reduce the MSSM fine tuning to ∆ < 10 for a Higgs mass between the LEPII bound and 130 GeV, and a corresponding scale M∗ of new physics as high as 30 to 65 times the Higgsino mass. If the fine-tuning criterion is indeed of physical relevance, the findings indicate the presence of new physics in the form of new states of mass of O(M∗) that generated the effective operators in the first instance. At small tanβ these states can be a gauge singlet or a SU(2) triplet. We derive analytical results for the EW scale fine-tuning for the MSSM with higher dimensional operators, including the quantum corrections which are also applicable to the pure MSSM case in the limit the coefficients of the higher dimension operators vanish. A general expression for the fine-tuning is also obtained for an arbitrary two-Higgs doublet potential. 1 e-mail: [email protected] 2 e-mail: [email protected] 3 e-mail: [email protected]

Implications for New Physics from Fine-Tuning Arguments: I. Application to SUSY and Seesaw Cases

We revisit the standard argument to estimate the scale of new physics (NP) beyond the SM, based on the sensitivity of the Higgs mass to quadratic divergences. Although this argument is arguably naive, the corresponding estimate, ΛSM < ∼ 2−3 TeV, works reasonably well in most cases and should be considered a conservative bound, as it ignores other contributions to the Higgs mass which are potent...

UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW SCHOOL OF PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY PARTICLE PHYSICS THEORY GROUP Grand Unification Phenomenology at the LHC and Beyond

We investigate models of supersymmetric grand unification based on the gauge groups SU(5), SO(10) and E6, as well as in a class of orbifolds inspired by four dimensional Strings. We follow a stepwise analysis starting our journey with a revisit to the Standard Model and commenting on major issues that are motivation for new physics. We then introduce supersymmetry and discuss the Minimal Supers...

The Fine–tuning Problem of the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking Mechanism in Minimal Susy Models

We calculate the region of the MSSM parameter space (i.e. M1/2, m0, μ, . . . ) compatible with a correct electroweak breaking and a realistic top-quark mass. To do so we have included all the one-loop corrections to the effective potential V1 and checked their importance in order to obtain consistent results. We also consider the fine-tuning problem due to the enormous dependence of MZ on ht (t...

Natural Implementation of Neutralino Dark Matter

The prediction of neutralino dark matter is generally regarded as one of the successes of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). However the successful regions of parameter space allowed by WMAP and collider constraints are quite restricted. We discuss fine-tuning with respect to both dark matter and Electroweak Symmetry Breaking (EWSB) and explore regions of MSSM parameter space wit...

Haggling over the Fine-tuning Price of Lep

We amplify previous discussions of the fine-tuning price to be paid by supersymmetric models in the light of LEP data, especially the lower bound on the Higgs boson mass, studying in particular its power of discrimination between different parameter regions and different theoretical assumptions. The analysis is performed using the full one-loop effective potential. The whole range of tan β is d...
